Fifth Sunday of Epiphany

February 5, 2012

WELCOME

In Isaiah it is the one God who sits above the earth and numbers the stars—it is that God who strengthens the powerless. So in Jesus' healing work we see the hand of the creator God, lifting up the sick woman to health and service (diakonia). Like Simon's mother-in-law, we are lifted up to health and diakonia. Following Jesus, we strengthen the powerless; like Jesus, we seek to renew our own strength in quiet times of prayer.

PRAYER SHAWL KNITTERS

We need your help! The prayer shawl supply has been diminished and we are anxious to keep this ministry active. If you are a knitter and are willing to provide a shawl/s, please let Vi Price know at viprice@rochester.rr.com or by phone at 617-4261. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

ADULT FORUM

Erma Perkins is a hospice nurse and educator. Her employer, Lifetime Care Hospice, was partnered with Zululand Hospice in 2003 when it requested a "twin" through the Foundation for Hospices of Sub-Saharan Africa. Erma coordinates annual visits. The organization raises funds throughout the year and takes a check, medical supplies, and gifts for the staff and orphans.

Zululand Hospice cares for several hundred HIV+ patients and children affected and infected by HIV. They receive no government funds and their patients do not have insurance. Many live in hovels without plumbing. The funds raised are a result of those working in the hospice shopping in South Africa and bringing back beaded jewelry, carvings, baskets, etc. They buy fabric there and make placemats, purses, and tote bags. Two days are spent in a game reserve where pictures are taken which hospice volunteer, Gail, mats and frames beautifully.

Bible Study Opportunity

We will begin a five week study session entitled “Embracing An Adult Faith” by Marcus Borg and Tim Scorer. “Embracing an Adult Faith is an exciting, five-session adult-formation resource for those seeking a richer understanding of issues in contemporary Christian practice and theology: Who is Jesus: Who is God? What is salvation? How do we practice our faith? How do we live in community?. Making use of a DVD and small group discussion we will ask the questions and learn from one another as we grow in our understanding of God and faith. Evening sessions will take place on Monday evenings, February 6, 13, 20, 27 and March 5 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Day sessions will take place on Wednesdays, February 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 beginning at 10 a.m.

Then you have come to the right place. For those interested we will gather for two evenings to focus on the Lutheran Church, Atonement’s ministry, basic theological concepts and focal points and other questions and concerns that may arise around the opportunity to become a member of Atonement. See Pastor Macholz for further details. In the meantime please plan on joining with him on February 8th and 15th at 7:30 p.m. in the library. There’s a sign up sheet in the Narthex if you’d like to announce your intentions. Please feel free to invite a friend.

OFFICE NOTES

Don’t forget to check the sign up sheet in the Narthex to see when you can help us keep the sidewalks clear for worship services - Thank you!

There’s also a sign-up sheet to help host the coffee and bagels between services on Sunday mornings… It involves making the coffee, setting out the bagels and cream cheese, and cleaning up afterwards. One of the “regulars” would be happy to show you the ropes.
